What is an Oral Cancer Screening?

Oral cancer screenings are evaluations performed by a dentist to find indications of cancer or precancerous diseases in your mouth. They aim to detect signs of oral cancer early when there is a higher possibility of a cure.

Early Detection for Better Health

Individuals with a higher risk of the disease can benefit more from oral cancer screenings. They can enjoy better health by identifying precancerous conditions at an early stage when the cancer is most easily removed and has the best chance of recovery. You have a higher risk of getting oral cancer if you have a history of the following:

  • Tobacco and cigarette use
  • Heavy alcohol use
  • Previous oral cancer diagnosis
  • Serious sun exposure (lip cancer)

If you have any of the conditions mentioned and you are concerned about your risk of oral cancer, our dentists at Norman & Gill Dentistry can help determine the right screening test. If required, we will also help you find ways to reduce your risk.

Oral Cancer Screening Procedure

Usually, an oral cancer screening is done at a routine dentist visit. During the procedure, your dentist examines the inside of your to search for mouth sores or colored patches. Your dentist will also feel the tissues in your mouth with gloved hands to look for lumps or other irregularities. The dentist could also feel for lumps in your neck and throat.

Your dentist may also perform additional tests to screen for oral cancer. These tests may include a screening blue dye, which you will rinse your mouth with and see if abnormal cells will react; and screening light, which makes abnormal cells appear white.

After the Oral Cancer Screening

If your dentist finds any signs of oral cancer or precancerous conditions, you will either have a follow-up visit to see if the abnormal cells are still present or take a biopsy procedure. The latter requires the removal of a cell sample to be tested in a laboratory to confirm if the cells are indeed cancerous.  Your general dentist may perform the biopsy or refer you to an oral cancer specialist, who is also an expert in oral cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Whether you think you have a high risk of oral cancer or not, it is best not to skip your next dental visit so you can have an oral cancer screening.
